Participants were asked how important being multiracial was in their everyday life. If 'somewhat important', 'important', or 'very important' were chosen participants were asked to elaborate.

Answers commonly consisted of being multiracial as a crucial part of their identity:

  • "It makes me unique"
  • "Because it is who I am"
  • "Because it impacts the way I am perceived and my interactions with people"
  • "It influences how I see the world and how I respond to comments from friends and coworkers"

Other common answers were that being multiracial has greatly influenced their belief systems:

  • "Coming from a biracial background has greatly influenced my values and mannerisms."
  • "It affects the food I eat and some of the moral codes I live by"
  • "I feel that being multiracial has given me a better sense of empathy and compassion"

The question asked was how positively or negatively have the experiences at Bryn Mawr impacted the participants' identity as a multiracial individual. I was personally surprised by the responses. I was hoping for more 'very positively' answers, but was also pleased there was zero 'very negatively' answers. The median answers were 'somewhat positively' and 'neither positively nor negatively.'
