The Hapa Project

The Hapa Project was created by Kip Fullbeck in 2001. It is a multiracial identity project and includes a published book, a traveling photographic exhibition, community presentations, and an online community. The word hapa means mixed ethnic heritage with partial roots in asian and/or pacific islander ancestry.

Fullbeck photographed over 1200 self-identified hapa subjects all over the world, all in a similar style (head on and bare skinned). After each subject was photographed, he/she handwrote their answer to the question "what are you?",  identifying their ethnicites in their own words.

The Hapa Project was made to increase awareness of the millions of multiracial individuals, particularly of asian/pacific islander descent. This project gives a voice to previously ignored ethnic groups and encourages solidarity and empowerment within the multiracial community. Fulbeck described his main objective as creating a book that shows biracial children they are not alone in their daily experiences.

The project has been exhibited all over the world and can be found at http://www.thehapaproject.com
